As you've probably noticed I don't come around here often anymore. I was already starting to move away in favor of Twitter but now that DA has changed for the worse (seriously, this layout is awful) I won't be posting here anymore. I won't delete my account for archival reasons but if you want to contact me please do so on my other social medias:

Power-Con 2019

2 min read
So I just got back from this year's Power-Con, and boy was this a change. For one, the convention was being held in Anaheim this year, super convenient for me since I live close by. And second, this was the first year I attended with someone other than my friend Hari. Instead I went with my friend Marc (aka DestinationMarc on YouTube and Twitter), and it was different, but a good different.

The guest turnout was also better this time around, despite the list looking very sad on the official site. Noelle Stevenson and some of the writers for the new She-Ra were there, and I got a poster signed by them, along with a couple great pictures with some of the cosplay contestants. I also bought a few prints and commissions from some amazingly talented artists, a cel from the original She-Ra, a couple ThunderCats stickers, a Lord Zedd figure from the new Power Rangers Lightning Collection, and Marc bought me the Spyro NECA figure which was way bigger than I thought. XD

We stayed for 3 panels, all during the after-hours events. First was the Bios of MOTU Classics, which my friend Tom Bryski moderated! It was really interesting to hear about what went into the new character bios, and I got to talk with Penny Dreadful about why the franchise is special to me and what makes it so great. The next was Toysplosion with Pixel Dan, which was hilarious and informative all at the same time, and at the end they announced the MOTU Toy Guide from Dark Horse!! I've been absolutely loving the Dark Horse books, definitely gonna get this one. And the last one... James Eatock's premiere of "Return of Faker". I can't say what I saw, but I can say... it was worth the price of admission. This fan-made He-Man episode blew my mind, it was THAT good.

And of course I can't forget one of the best parts, getting to meet the hosts of my favorite Masters podcasts, Steve and Jeremy of The Podcasters of the Universe!

So overall, good year? Yeah! Much better than last, but still hoping for it to be how it was 2 years ago. #BringBackTheVAs

Well, my con adventures are officially over for this year. Over the weekend I visited Torrance for the annual Power-Con. And... it was fun. Not nearly as much fun as last year or even last weekend at Power Morphicon, but I enjoyed my time.

So what was different about this year? Well, the truth is, the guest turnout was very low. Don't get me wrong, there were some great guests, but aside from 3 people that I see and talk to every year, it was underwhelming. I'm of course referring to the fact that there were no voice actors. I know that may not matter to a lot of people, but to me, that's a huge part of why I go. To hang out with the people who inspire me. A majority of my time there every year has been spent talking to voice actors, and without them, it felt kind of empty. The vibe was completely different.

I did talk to the event director about this, as it was important to me and something I felt might hurt the convention in the long run. The response I got was rather surprising. Apparently there have been numerous complaints about how the con felt too stale because the same guests would show up every year. I feel the complete opposite, so I don't understand that mindset. I also found out that my favorite year (2013) was their worst in terms of business, so that was news to me.

Due to the theming, certain guests are intentionally not contacted if they don't fit with the theme of that particular year. I personally don't agree with that policy, and believe that anyone should be able to be invited. If they turn down the invitation, that's a different story, and I understand that sometimes happens, but to not reach out to them at all just because they're "unfitting" just doesn't seem right to me.

But anyway, I had fun. I just wish I would have known about the finalized guest list before making my decision on whether or not to stay the full weekend.
